My Heart Is Heavy Today

What Surgery Reminded Me About Life, Grace, and the People Still Searching for God

By Pastor Kelly — Moxahala Methodist Church

Yesterday reminded me how fragile life really is.

As I sat preparing for surgery, there was a heaviness in my heart that I can’t fully explain. Not just because of the procedure itself… but because moments like these have a way of stripping everything down to what truly matters.

When you’re sitting in a doctor’s office.
When you’re waiting for results.
When words like cancer, surgery, and uncertainty suddenly become personal…

You start thinking differently.

The noise fades.
The busyness loses its grip.
And the things we normally push aside suddenly feel incredibly important.

Including eternity.

Life Is More Fragile Than We Want to Admit

Most of us live like we have unlimited time.

We assume there will always be another conversation.
Another Sunday.
Another opportunity to reconnect with God later.

But moments like surgery remind you:
life is not something we control.

And honestly, one of the heaviest parts for me wasn’t fear for myself.

It was the realization of how many people are still carrying pain, emptiness, confusion, and spiritual distance—without hope.

People searching everywhere except the One who truly sees them.

That’s what weighed on me yesterday.

My heart felt heavy for people who don’t yet know how deeply loved they are by God.

The Cross Feels Different When Life Gets Real

There’s something about weakness that changes the way you see Jesus.

The cross stops being a distant religious symbol
and becomes personal again.

You remember that God understands suffering.
He understands fear.
He understands pain and uncertainty.

And somehow, in the middle of vulnerable moments, the presence of God feels nearer than ever.

Not because life suddenly becomes easy.

But because you realize you were never carrying it alone.

We Aren’t Promised Control—But We Are Promised Presence

One thing yesterday reminded me is this:

God never promised us a life without difficulty.

But He did promise:

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

That promise matters differently when you’re lying in a hospital bed.

It matters differently when the future feels uncertain.

And it matters differently when you realize just how desperately people need hope right now.

My Heart Is Heavy… But Also Hopeful

Heavy because life is short.

Heavy because so many people are hurting quietly.

Heavy because there are people all around us trying to carry things they were never meant to carry alone.

But hopeful because grace is still reaching people.

Hopeful because God still changes hearts.

Hopeful because no one is too far gone.

And hopeful because even in weakness, God has a way of reminding us what truly matters.

A Simple Invitation

If you’ve been putting off getting closer to God…

Don’t wait for a crisis to remind you what matters most.

You don’t need perfect faith.
You don’t need all the answers.

Just take one step.

Because you are not as far from God as you feel.
